Welcome to the OFFICIAL web site of Varsity Cats Post Another Win, 5-4 over CCM!!! The Varsity Cats guaranteed themselves a winning spring record with a solid victory over CCM. The Jungmann-Dobson-Wendt line accounted for 3 of the Cat goals with Chris Jungmann picking up three points (1 goal, 2 assists), Ryan Dobson bagging a goal (assisted by Jungmann/ Stephen Stanis) and an assist, and Kevin Wendt lighting the lamp. Eric Cruickshank continued his scoring binge with two goals, assisted by his linemates PJ Marsek and Ross Agrest. This was a good all around victory that featured good offense and solid defense/goaltending. Netminder, Erich Held stopped 28 of the 32 shots thrown at him and the Cats were outshot 32-24, but all that mattered was the final score! Varsity Cats move to winning record (5-4) for the season after two shut out wins over Carmel! Goalie Erich Held and the Cat defense stoned the Carmel team two times shutting them out over the last week 3-0 and 4-0. A total of 47 shots were stopped! Great job Cats. Offensively- the lamp was lit by Agrest, Katz and Rebmann in the first game with helpers from Cruickshank, Marsek, Wendt and Collins. The second game featured goals from Agrest (Cruickshank/Stanis), Marsek (from Agrest), an unassisted goal from Cruickshank, and THE final goal by Marsek (from Stephen Stanis.) All-stater, PJ Marsek also delighted the crowd with some nifty, creative stickhandling where he moved the puck with his hockey stick blade, turned over and on top of the puck. The Cats also dropped two games to the tough CLS hockey club by the same score of 5-2. Scoring in the first loss came from Ryan Dobson (from Brendan Collins) and one from Chris Jungmann from (Eric Cruickshank). Scoring in the second loss was done by PJ Marsek from Eric Cruickshank- who must be the top point getter among all 8th graders playing in the spring for all teams in the league (and a top scorer across all players). The second goal was registered by Cruickshank from (JT Hamilton and Ian Rebmann) JV Cats Bring One Home for the Mom’s! The JV squad brought in a victory on Mother’s Day over Grayslake/Antioch, 5-3. The Cats jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second period backed by 2 goals from Garrett Gratz (assisted by Colin Wonderlic and Matt Majewski) and a tally from JT Hamilton (from Eric Cruickshank). Grayslake then tightened it up 3-2 late in the second period before Eric Cruickshank blasted in a laser beam slap shot from just inside the blue line. Grayslake came back again to narrow the game to 4-3 before Colin Wonderlic (aka- ‘the Biscuit’ because he ate ten of them at Mother’s Day dinner…seriously) fought off a couple of opponents to top shelf an empty netter. It was a solid victory that featured appearances by both Cat goalies. The victory helped the JV Cats draw to .500 for the season.
JV Cats provide some fight but drop their two games to Mundelein and Carmel. The first game the ‘player depleted’ Cats lost 6-2, as three floaters were playing in the Varsity game. They gave it their all though registering two goals, the first by Tony Rossetti (assisted by the ‘chick magnet’, Landon Moore). The second goal was scored by JT Hamilton with assists from Cam Taylor and Austin Deardorff.
The second loss (4-1) featured a tremendous effort by the Cats who outshot Carmel, but ran into some tough goaltending. The lone Cat goal was put in by Collin Wonderlic who put the puck where the peanut butter goes (top shelf) over the goalie’s shoulder. Collin’s goal was assisted by Stephen Stanis who also assisted on two varsity goals during the week. The two losses put the JV won/loss record at 4(W) -5(L)-1 (tie) so they’re within striking distance of turning in a winning season.
